Rescue work continued overnight. Airport open for domestic flights. Organised evacuation has commenced.
Six rescue sites in operation. Major damage to electricity, water and sewerage plant.
First official death toll has been released. Main hospital damaged but operating. Triage and welfare centres opened. Airport and port closed. Telecommunications networks damaged and stretched.
A strong earthquake struck Christchurch just before one o’clock today. Damage is extensive. Buildings have collapsed in the city and suburbs. Electricity and water supplies have been disrupted. A state of civil emergency has been declared and central Christchurch city is being evacuated.
A strong earthquake struck south of Fiji just before midnight.
