Deep Earthquake, Central New Zealand

A deep earthquake near Golden Bay was felt throughout the lower North Island and upper South Island early this afternoon, according to data supplied by Geonet.

The magnitude 5.5 earthquake, which struck at 12:37 p.m., was centred 50 km east of Collingwood at a depth of 180 km.

Similar deep earthquakes struck this area in January and February.

A magnitude 4.6 quake, 160 km deep struck 60 km east of Collingwood on January 16th.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake, 180 km deep struck 80 km north-east of Collingwood on February 16th. This event generated a few reports of goods falling off shelves around Wellington and Marlborough, according to Hazardwatch.

    My mother felt this one – said it was like a big snap. Apparently didn’t go one, just the snap and shook for about 3 or 4 seconds.
