Strong Earthquake Near Tonga

A strong, moderately deep earthquake struck near Tonga at 6:22 this evening (NZST).

The magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck at a depth of 44 km according to data supplied by the US Geological Survey.

The quake was located 195 km ESE of Hihifo, Tonga; 290 km SSW of Pago Pago, American Samoa. This location is further north of the location where a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck early on the morning of May 4th.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a bulletin at 7:19 p.m. reporting that a SMALL tsunami wave 8 centimetres in height was recorded by a wave gauge at Pago Pago 39 minutes after the earthquake, at 7:01 p.m. NZST. The bulletin stated that a larger local wave may have been generated, but a Pacific-wide tsunami threat did not exist.
