Earthquake, Inland Hawke’s Bay

A deep magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck inland Hawke’s Bay this morning.

The earthquake which struck at 8:14 a.m. NZDT on Monday February 5th 2007 was located 40 km east of Turangi at a depth of 60 km. It was preceded by a magnitude 4.5 quake 152 km deep located north of Lake Taupo at 7:36 a.m.

The larger earthquake was felt from Nelson and Wellington to Whakatane and, by 10:30 this morning, had prompted 123 reports from people who felt the event. No damage has been reported.
