Offshore Quake Near Wellington

A deep magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck off-shore near Wellington this afternoon.

The earthquake, which struck at 1:44 p.m. on February 7th 2007 (NZDT), was centred 30 km west of Porirua, 40 km north-west of Wellington (just north of the Marlborough Sounds), at a depth of 50 km.

Within an hour, Geonet had received 703 reports from people who had felt the earthquake as far away as Takaka in Golden Bay, Hawera in the north and as far west as Palmerston North.

Nine reports from Wellington, Johnsonville, Tawa, Titahi Bay, Porirua, Raumati Beach, and Lower Hutt indicated shaking intensity reached V on the Modified Mercalli scale. At MM V, which indicates moderate shaking, some slight damage may have occurred.
