Strong Earthquake, Solomon Islands

A strong earthquake struck the Solomon Islands this evening, New Zealand time. The magnitude 6.7 quake was located 75 km WSW of Honiara at 8:39 p.m. New Zealand time. Early reports indicate the quake was crustal and possibly as shallow as 1.8 km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a bulletin on the quake at 9 p.m. New Zealand time advising that no destructive tsunami threat exists based on historical data.
