Kermadec Islands Earthquakes

The magnitude of last evening’s earthquake in the southern Kermadec Islands has been revised upwards, and information on a subsequent event has been posted.

The earthquake which struck 130 km west-north-west of L’Esperance Rock in the Kermadec Islands at 5:16 p.m. on Tuesday 25th September 2007 has been revised upward from magnitude 5.3 to 6.1, and the depth placed at 400km.

A smaller magnitude 4.8 quake struck 200 km east-north-east of L’Esperance Rock at 5:13 this morning at a depth of 35 km.
