Loyalty Islands Quakes Continue

After another pause, earthquake activity in the Loyalty Islands area of New Caledonia continued overnight, adding 7 more earthquakes (two of magnitude 6.0) to the list.

In the 24 hours following the commencement of activity at 7:58 a.m. New Zealand time on Friday 28th September 2007, 23 earthquakes have been recorded in the area. The list includes two 4th magnitude events, sixteen 5th magnitude events and five earthquakes of magnitude 6.

Activity ceased again at 4:02 this morning, September 29th, a few hours after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck far to the north in the Mariana Islands.

    The western boundary of the pacific plate seems to be highly active at the moment…I’m at least glad that most of these shakes are happening at either non-populated, or sparsely populated areas (haven’t heard of any damage)…I think it’s best they happen in those areas!
