Puysegur Activity Eases

Earthquake Activity in the Puysegur Trench following the large quakes of Sunday night appears to be declining at a typical rate.

Four of the events have been documented by the US Geological Survey, including the magnitude 7.3 and 6.8 quakes of Sunday night.

Seismographs indicate that about 8 earthquakes occurred in the area in the 24 hours to midday today, Tuesday 2nd October 2007, judging by the characteristics of the traces. This includes a magnitude 5.0 event at 2:35 a.m. and a magnitude 4.9 quake at 5:20 a.m.

If the series of quakes is a normal mainshock/aftershock series, activity will continue to decline over the next few days as the area around the plate boundary adjusts to the stresses altered by the larger quakes.
