Strong Earthquake, Northern Kermadecs

A strong, deep earthquake struck the northern Kermadec Islands this morning. The magnitude 6.4 earthquake, which struck at 10:06 a.m. on Wednesday 17th October 2007, was located 490 km north-north-west of Raoul Island at a depth of 470 km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, which listed the quake at magnitude 6.6, issued a bulletin at 10:17 a.m. advising, “A destructive tsunami was not generated based on earthquake and historical tsunami data.”
