A moderately strong, shallow earthquake struck near Reefton this afternoon.
The magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck at 2:12 p.m. on Wednesday October 24th 2007. It was located 20 km east of Reefton (50 km south-west of Murchison) at a depth of 9 km. Early reports from the public indicate that the quake was felt strongly at Blackball and Lyell, and as far away as Fox Glacier, Christchurch and Nelson.
