Major Quake, Northern Kermadecs

A major earthquake struck the northern Kermadec Islands this evening.

The magnitude 7.6 quake which struck at 8:28 p.m. on Sunday December 9th 2007 (NZ Daylight Time) was located 345 km north of Raoul Island at a depth of 187 km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a bulletin at 8:50 p.m. advising that the depth of the quake was unlikely to have generated a tsunami.
