Skating On Thin Ice

Tawa’s coldest overnight temperature this winter has left the birds skating on thin ice when they popped in for their morning ablutions in the bird bath.

Still conditions and a clear sky saw Tawa’s temperature begin falling in a determined fashion at dusk last night. The decline was steady with the temperature passing below 5 ºC by 10 p.m. and continuing to drift downward.

By midnight, it was 1.6 ºC, hitting the overnight low of 0.4 ºC at 5:19 a.m. on Thursday the 21st of August 2008. This is the lowest temperature recorded at Tawa this year, and just above the lowest temperature logged since the Tawa Weather station was commissioned at the beginning of 2005. That record belongs to the 0.0 ºC recorded on the 7th of September 2007.

Temperatures would have been lower on the valley floor, where residents had a crispy start to the day.

This year’s coldest night (derived from temperature readings taken between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.) is the 1.9 ºC recorded on August 11 when a clear spell followed a bitterly cold southerly which brought snow to higher ground in the Wellington region two days earlier.
