Moderate Quake, Kermadecs

Another moderate earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands early this morning.

The magnitude 5.5 quake, which struck at 3:51 a.m. NZDT on Sunday the 5th of October 2008, was located 100 km south-south-east of Raoul Island (220 km north-east of L’Esperance Rock) at a depth of 35 km. This morning’s event was 1050 km north-east of Auckland, and continues the series of quakes that followed the magnitude 7.0 quake of Tuesday September 30th.

Further analysis of Friday morning’s quake near L’Esperance Rock has resulted in the magnitude being revised upward from 5.2 to 5.4.
