Strong Quake, Vanuatu

A strong quake of magnitude 6.3 struck the islands of Vanuatu this morning, Wednesday the 5th of November 2008, New Zealand Daylight Time.

The 7:36 a.m. quake was located 75 km north of Port Vila on Efate (220 km south-east of Luganville, Espiritu Santo) at a depth of 200 km. Initial plots place the epicentre on Mai Island which lies between Efate and Epi islands.

Geoscience Australia estimates the quake at magnitude 5.9 at the same depth of 200 km. Their calculations indicate that the quake would have caused damage within 30 km of the epicentre, and would have been felt up to 400 km away.
