A moderately strong earthquake struck the southern Kermadec Islands this morning.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck 105 km south-south-west of L’Esperance Rock in the southern Kermadec chain of islands at 2:23 this morning. The 10 km deep quake was centred 735 km north-east of Auckland, 365 km south-south-west of Raoul Island.
Geoscience Australia reports the earthquake as magnitude 5.4, but deeper at 85 km. They estimate that the event would have been felt up to 250 km from the epicentre.
