An aftershock of this morning’s earthquake near Palmerston North was felt just after 8 o’clock this morning.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck 10 km south of Palmerston North (120 km north-east of Wellington) at 7:04 this morning. The 40 km-deep quake was widely felt in the southern part of the North Island attracting more than 700 reports from the public by 8:30 a.m.
An aftershock of magnitude 4.3 struck the same location at 8:05 a.m. This event was felt from Wanganui to Wellington and in the Manawatu and Wairarapa regions.
The earthquakes were preceded by a quake located near Jackson Bay, Fiordland or Lake Benmore in South Canterbury at 5:40 a.m. Information for this event is not yet available in GeoNet’s database.
