Strong Quake, Kermadec Islands

A strong, shallow earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands last night.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck 80 km east of Raoul Island at 10:21 last night New Zealand Daylight Time. The earthquake was centred 300 km north-east of L’Esperance Rock at a depth of 10 km according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Geoscience Australia reports the quake as magnitude 6.2 at a depth of 34 km. They estimate that it would have caused damage within 40 km of the epicentre, and would have been felt up to 560 km away.
