Residents of Gisborne and northern Hawke’s Bay were woken by a moderately strong earthquake early this morning.

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck 10 km north-west of Wairoa, 70 km south-west of Gisborne, at 1:23 this morning. The quake was 40 km deep.
The earthquake was felt from southern Hawke’s Bay to the Bay of Plenty, with most reports coming from Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne and eastern parts of the Bay of Plenty. Slight damage was reported from Wairoa and inland at Tuai, a settlement on the Waikaremoana power scheme.
