A strong earthquake struck the Antofagasta region of northern Chile just after midday today, New Zealand time.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck 80 km east-north-east of Calama, Chile (205 km east of Tocopilla) at eleven minutes after midday, New Zealand time. The onshore quake was deep being centred at a depth of 90 km, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Geoscience Australia estimates the quake would have caused damage within 40 km of the epicentre and would have been felt up to 550 km away.
