Strong Earthquake in the Kermadecs

A strong earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands this afternoon.

The magnitude 6.5 earthquake, which struck at 4:16 p.m. on Wednesday January 31st 2007 NZDT, was located 40 km south of Raoul Island at a depth of 54 km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, which estimated the quake at magnitude 6.6, issued a bulletin at 4:33 p.m. NZDT stating that a tsunami was NOT expected from the event.
