Pacific Quake Activity Eases
Wednesday, July 18th, 2007Monday’s burst of earthquake activity at various locations in the Pacific Ocean eased yesterday. Activity moved westward into the Indian Ocean as activity continued near Japan.

Monday, July 16th, 2007A series of moderate to strong earthquakes have struck the western Pacific during the past 24 hours. The five quakes, ranging between magnitude 5.0 and 6.7 have struck near Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, and Japan.
In the North Pacific, there have been 21 earthquakes in the Fox Islands part of the Aleutian Islands off Alaska and, in the past hour, two events of magnitude 5.0 and 4.9 in the Galapagos Islands off South America.
Hydro Lake Storage Declines Again
Sunday, July 15th, 2007New Zealand’s hydroelectric lake storage declined again during June, a month during which demand was generally lower than last year; as were inflows.
Deep Quake Activity Continues
Saturday, July 14th, 2007Two further earthquakes have struck deep underneath the North Island since Thursday evening’s magnitude 5.3 quake near Taupo.
A magnitude 4.4 event struck near Murupara at a depth of 68 km at 4:22 p.m. on Friday afternoon, the 13th of July 2007.
A magnitude 5.1 quake struck just offshore in the Tasman Sea west of Hawera very early this morning. The quake was 232 km deep and registered on seismographs at 12:47 a.m. Saturday.
The depth and magnitude of the earthquakes meant they were unlikely to have been felt, and they have not been listed on Geonet’s website.

Deep Earthquake, Taupo
Thursday, July 12th, 2007A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near Lake Taupo this evening. The 100 km-deep quake, which struck at 5:42 p.m. on the 12th of July 2007 was located 10 km east of Taupo.
The quake was felt in Wellington, Palmerston North, Hawke’s Bay and at Kawerau and Ohope in the Bay of Plenty.

Kermadec Earthquakes Continue
Tuesday, July 10th, 2007The series of earthquakes occurring near the Kermadec Islands has continued, with seven events with magnitudes between 4.5 and 5.5 reported during the past week.
