Strong Quake, Kermadecs

A strong earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands this afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The magnitude 6.0 quake, which struck at 2:37 p.m. on Tuesday the 25th of November 2008 New Zealand time, was located 130 km south of Raoul Island, 150 km north-east of L’Esperance Rock at a depth of 35 km.

Initial analysis by Geoscience Australia reports the quake at magnitude 5.7 at a depth of 30 km.

Steady Rain Eases

The weather system which brought heavy rain to the West Coast, the Nelson region and the far north brought a short burst of steady rain to Tawa overnight.

Major Quake, Sulawesi

A major undersea earthquake struck the Celebes Sea off the coast of Sulawesi just after 6 o’clock this morning, New Zealand time. A tsunami warning was issued for coastlines within a thousand kilometres of the quake, but it was considered that a threat to Pacific coastlines did not exist.

Armistice Day 2008

Some Wellingtonians were woken on Armistice Day 2008 by a deep magnitude 4.0 earthquake which struck 30 km east of Seddon at 6:20 a.m. A nearby shallow magnitude 3.1 quake followed eleven minutes later.
