Another deep off-shore earthquake struck the Bay of Plenty area overnight.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck 30 km north-east of Tauranga (30 km north-east of Te Puke) at 3:00 a.m. The quake was 210 km deep. The quake was felt from Tauranga to Palmerston North, and in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay.
Just before 1 o’clock yesterday morning, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off-shore 80 km north of White Island at a depth of 230 km. This event was more widely felt, with reports being filed from as far south as Nelson and Marlborough.
