A strong, deep earthquake struck south of the Fiji islands this evening.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck 630 km south of Suva, Fiji at 7:42 this evening, according to preliminary data provided by the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, centred 1550 km north-north-east of Auckland, was 520 km deep.
Aftershocks of magnitude 5.2 and 5.1, at a similar depth, followed at 7:51 and 8:19 p.m.
