Major Quake, Santa Cruz Islands

A major earthquake struck the Santa Cruz Islands shortly after 2 o’clock this afternoon, New Zealand time.

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck the Santa Cruz Islands at 2:12 this afternoon, New Zealand time. The undersea quake was 29 km deep.

Magnitude 6.4 and 6.6 aftershocks followed at 2:23 and 2:54.

The earthquake generated a tsunami, measured at 91cm at the wharf at Lata in the Santa Cruz Islands. The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management has issued a potential threat notice for New Zealand coastlines.
