A strong earthquake struck south of the Kermadec Islands this evening.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck south of the Kermadec Islands at 9:14 p.m. this evening New Zealand time.
The quake was centred 191 km south-south-east of L’Esperance Rock in the Kermadec Islands, 725 km north-east of Whakatane, 735 km north-north-east of Gisborne at a depth of 35 km according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Geoscience Australia Reports the earthquake as magnitude 6.0 and estimates that it would have been felt up to 450 km from the epicentre.
