Strong Quake, The Snares

A strong earthquake struck near The Snares islands at 7 o’clock this evening, New Zealand time.

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck 198 km north-west of Auckland Island at 19:00 NZST today. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the undersea quake was 10 km deep.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported the quake as magnitude 6.8 at depth of 10 km. It advised that, based on all available data, there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake.

The quake left a distinctive trace on New Zealand’s seismograph network. GeoNet reported the quake as magnitude 6.4, centred 190 km south-west of the Snares Islands at a depth of 34 km. The earthquake was distinctly felt in Otago and Southland, with some reports being filed with GeoNet from Wellington and as far north as Auckland.
