Strong Quake, Kermadecs

A strong undersea earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands yesterday afternoon, New Zealand time.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck 74 km north-north-east of L’Esperance Rock in the Kermadec Islands at 15:10 NZDT yesterday. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake was centred 853 km north-east of Whangarei, 890 km north-north-east of Whakatane at a depth of 10 km. No reports of the quake being felt in New Zealand have been filed with USGS.

GeoNet reports the quake as magnitude 6.0, 33 km deep, centred 850 km north-east of Whangarei. One report of the quake being felt weakly in Riverton, Southland, has been filed with GeoNet.
