Strong Earthquake Near Tonga

A strong earthquake struck near Tonga just before midday today.

The magnitude 6.1 quake, which struck at 11:54 a.m., was located 110 km west of Nuku’Alofa, Tonga at a depth of 156 km.

This morning’s earthquake is the fourth to occur near Tonga during the past week. The quakes ranged in magnitude between 4.2 and 6.1 at depths between 2 km and 156 km.

There have been three quakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 4.6 near Fiji at depths between 430 and 630 km during the past 7 days.

Earthquake activity further west near Vanuatu where a magnitude 6.8 quake struck early last week has now eased, with two events of magnitude 4.5 and 4.7 at depths of 278 km and 124 km during the past week.

    Just received a GeoNet advisory tonight that there was a 5.5 810km NE Auckland at 0244 this morning..
    Things are moving a little the past few days…

    That’s right. There was another event at about 4 am on the 16th about 300 km from the Urewera seismometer. Just waiting for the data on that to be processed.
