Earthquake activity near Tonga has risen during the last 7 days, according to data supplied by the US Geological Survey.
Five earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.5 and 5.2 have been reported in the vicinity of Tonga, at depths ranging between 10 and 130 km during the past week.
Four of these events occurred at different locations between Tonga and Samoa. The latest event, a magnitude 5.2 quake at a depth of 10 km struck 80 km east-south-east of Nuku’Alofa at 8:59 this morning, NZST.
Two very deep quakes with magnitudes of 4.6 and 4.3 have also been reported in the Fiji region during the past week.
