Residents of the Bay of Plenty have felt three, light to moderate earthquakes in recent days.
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck the Bay of Plenty at a depth of 80 km on Wednesday 29th November 2006. The 7:54 a.m. quake was located 20 km south-east of Kawerau (20 km south-west of Whakatane) and was felt from Tauranga to Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, and as far south as Palmerston North.
Two further earthquakes struck the area yesterday afternoon, Saturday December 2nd. A magnitude 4.0 quake struck at a depth of 5 km, 20 km north-west of Kawerau at 4:04 p.m. It was followed by another shallow event of magnitude 3.2, 10 km north-east of Matata at 5:35 p.m.
