A strong earthquake struck the southern Kermadec Islands this morning, New Zealand Daylight Time (NZDT).
The magnitude 6.5 earthquake, which struck at 10:06 a.m. Wednesday December 27th 2006 NZDT, was 33 km deep and located 380km west of L’Esperance Rock in the southern Kermadecs. According to preliminary data released by Geonet, the quake may have been felt on the east coast of the North Island, but it appears that no felt reports have been lodged at the time of writing.
