White Island Crater Camera

Work is underway to replace the crater floor camera at White Island following its failure at the end of October.

The camera, which became famous when Dino the dinosaur appeared to one side of the image, provides hourly images of the crater floor of the Bay of Plenty volcano.

The environment is highly acidic, necessitating a special housing to protect the camera which is located at the former sulphur works on the island. A Geonet spokesman said today that weather has delayed the camera replacement, with low cloud and fog preventing access to the island yesterday.

However, it is expected that the new camera will be installed and back online within the next fortnight. It is believed that Dino, who guards the camera installation, is looking forward to being able to welcome Internet visitors to his home once again.
