Quarry Blast Shakes Wellingtonians

Residents of three Wellington suburbs reported feeling an earthquake at 2:27 yesterday afternoon.

Investigation confirmed the shake, which registered as a magnitude 2.0 earthquake at a depth of 0 km, was due to blasting at a harbourside quarry.

Following the blast at Horokiwi quarry at 2:27 on Friday March 2nd 2007, eight “felt earthquake” reports were lodged on Geonet’s website.

Light shaking was reported from Broadmeadows, Newlands and Petone. One report of weak shaking was made from Petone.

    I was quite surprised to see this come through as an “earthquake” – but fair enough I supposed….technically, the earth did quake…
