Kermadec Earthquakes

A series of light to moderate earthquakes have struck near the Kermadec Islands since yesterday morning.

The sequence of earthquakes commenced at 10:19 a.m. on Wednesday the 4th of July 2007 NZST with a magnitude 4.6 quake located 285 km SSE of L’Esperance Rock in the southern Kermadecs at a depth of 45 km. A magnitude 4.5 quake struck 210 km west of Raoul Island at a depth of 300 km, 24 minutes later.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck to the north of the Kermadecs at 5:25 this morning. The quake was centred 265 km NNE of Raoul Island at a depth of 35 km.

Other events have appeared on some North Island seismographs, indicating further activity in the area to the north of New Zealand, including an event at about 7 o’clock this morning. Data on these events had not appeared in the databases at the time this report was prepared.
