Deep Quake Activity Continues

Two further earthquakes have struck deep underneath the North Island since Thursday evening’s magnitude 5.3 quake near Taupo.

A magnitude 4.4 event struck near Murupara at a depth of 68 km at 4:22 p.m. on Friday afternoon, the 13th of July 2007.

A magnitude 5.1 quake struck just offshore in the Tasman Sea west of Hawera very early this morning. The quake was 232 km deep and registered on seismographs at 12:47 a.m. Saturday.

The depth and magnitude of the earthquakes meant they were unlikely to have been felt, and they have not been listed on Geonet’s website.

  1. Chris says:

I was wondering why those two events weren’t mentioned. I should have checked USGS…

  2. Ken says:

    They aren’t on USGS.
Geonet chooses NOT to publish data on these quakes.
    So I do.
