Last night’s earthquake on the southern shore of Lake Taupo was felt throughout the lower North Island.
The magnitude 5.5 quake struck at 9:07 p.m. on Thursday December 27th, 2007. It was located 10 km north-west of Turangi, 50 km south-west of Taupo township at a depth of 120 km.
Members of the public as far south as Wellington, in New Plymouth, at Mt. Maunganui and in Gisborne have reported feeling the shaking caused by the quake and 401 reports had been lodged by nine this morning, Friday.
An offshore magnitude 4.4 quake located 40 km south of Hawera the previous evening was also 120 km deep.
