Matata Quake Swarm Continues

Off-shore earthquakes near the Bay of Plenty town of Matata have continued through December and into January.

GeoNet has reported on four events at three locations near Matata during the first four days of January 2008. The quakes have ranged in magnitude between 2.8 and 3.3, with two located 10 km north-east of Matata. One each have been located 20 km north-east and 10 km north of the town. All of the quakes have been shallow, at depths of about 5 km.

GeoNet reports that thirteen quakes located near Matata were felt during December. The largest event was a very shallow magnitude 4.1 quake on the 19th.
