Earthquakes, Eastern North Island

Three shallow earthquakes have struck the eastern North Island during the past week, with events near Gisborne and Wairoa.

A magnitude 3.4 quake struck near Wairoa just after midnight on Wednesday February 6th 2008. The 00:32 a.m. quake was located 30 km south-east of Wairoa (70 km south-west of Gisborne) at a depth of 25 km.

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck closer to Gisborne on the morning of Saturday the 9th. The 5:24 a.m. quake was located 20 km south-east of Gisborne at a depth of 33 km.

A stronger magnitude 4.1 quake struck near Wairoa just before dawn this morning, Monday the 11th. The 5:39 a.m. event was located 30 km south-east of Wairoa (70 km south-west of Gisborne) at a depth of 30km.

All three quakes were felt locally, with this morning’s event reportedly felt at Feilding and Karamea.
