Quakes, North-eastern BoP

Earthquake activity near the southern limit of the Kermadec Ridge to the north-east of the Bay of Plenty has continued.

Two deep quakes of magnitude 4.4 and 3.7 were recorded early yesterday afternoon, Saturday the 1st of March 2008, New Zealand time.

Another two events struck the area today. A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck at 10:55 this morning. The quake was located 385 km north-north-east of Gisborne (445 km north-east of Rotorua) at a depth of 73 km.

A magnitude 5.4 quake struck the area at 7 minutes past midday at the shallower depth of 42 km.
