A strong earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands this evening, Tuesday the 18th March 2008. The magnitude 6.1 quake was located 70 km north-east of Raoul Island at a depth of 28 km, according to data supplied by the Geological Survey of the United States of America.
Geoscience Australia report the quake at magnitude 6.2 and New Zealand’s seismologists, who have responsibility for the area, have pointedly ignored the 9:23 p.m. event and nothing has been posted on the GeoNet website.
The shallow undersea quake was not assessed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
