Quake Near Matawai

Residents of the Bay of Plenty felt the smaller of two earthquakes that struck the North Island this afternoon.

The magnitude 4.3 earthquake, which struck at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday the 19th of October 2008, was located 20 km north-west of Matawai (20 km south of Opotiki, 40 km south-east of Whakatane) at a depth of 50 km. The quake was felt in the eastern Bay of Plenty, strongly at Whakatane.

A much deeper magnitude 5.6 quake located 20 km north of Rotorua at a depth of 200 km was felt along the eastern cost of the North Island and at Wellington at 12:13 p.m.
