Kermadec Quakes Continue

Two moderately strong earthquakes have struck the Kermadec Islands today.

Following Monday morning’s magnitude 6.4 earthquake near Raoul Island, revised downward from an initial magnitude 6.7, a further three earthquakes have struck the Kermadec Island chain; with two events reported today.

A shallow magnitude 4.7 quake struck 120 km south-south-east of Raoul Island (210 km north-east of L’Esperance Rock) on the evening of Wednesday 21st.

At 10:28 this morning, a magnitude 5.0 quake struck 125 km south of Raoul Island (160 km north-east of L’Esperance Rock) at a depth of 35 km. A magnitude 5.5 quake followed at 2:29 this afternoon. Data for the second event is still being refined with its location currently thought to be 150 km north-east of Raoul Island at a depth of 61 km.
