A moderately strong earthquake struck near Gisborne late last night.

A shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck 40 km east of Gisborne at 11:12 p.m. last night. The undersea quake was 20 km deep, and centred where a swarm of earthquakes struck on Monday. Nine quakes were reported in the area during Monday, the largest events being two magnitude 4 quakes at 8:51 a.m. and 12:41.
Last night’s earthquake was felt in Poverty Bay, on the East Coast and in northern parts of Hawke’s Bay.
