South Kermadec Quake

A moderately strong, shallow earthquake struck to the south of the Kermadec Islands yesterday afternoon.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck to the south of the Kermadec Islands at 4:15 on the afternoon of Tuesday June 30th. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake as 35 km deep, located 115 km south-south-east of L’Esperance Rock, 810 km north-east of Auckland.

Geoscience Australia also reported the event as magnitude 5.4 but much shallower at 1 km. They estimate the tremor would have been felt up to 250 km from the epicentre.
