A moderately strong, deep earthquake struck the Wanganui Basin just after eleven o’clock this morning.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake located under the Tasman Sea west of the North Island, 30 km north-west of Otaki (40 km west of Levin), struck at 11:09 this morning. The quake, centred 80 km north of Wellington, was 50 km deep.
Shaking was felt from Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay to Wellington.
