A moderately strong, deep earthquake struck near Paraparaumu overnight.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck within 5 km of Paraparaumu (40 km north of Wellington) at 2:41 this morning. The 60 km-deep quake was felt widely in the southern part of the North Island, attracting felt reports from southern Hawke’s Bay to Marlborough. Shaking was described as strong in Island Bay, Karori, Waitangirua and Wellington.
By 9 a.m. the GeoNet website had received 340 reports of the earthquake from the public.
