A moderately strong, deep earthquake struck central New Zealand this morning.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck under the Tasman Sea this morning. The 6:02 a.m. quake was located in the South Taranaki Bight, 80 km south-west of Hawera, 150 km north-west of Wellington at a depth of 170 km.
The earthquake was felt in southern parts of the North Island from Wanganui to Wellington and in northern districts of the South Island, from Nelson to Marlborough.
