A magnitude five earthquake struck south of the Kermadec Islands this evening, New Zealand time.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck 265 km south-east of L’Esperance Rock in the Kermadec Islands (855 km east-north-east of Auckland) at 8:56 p.m. New Zealand time. The quake was 60 km deep.
Geoscience Australia reports the quake as magnitude 5.0 at the shallower depth of 15 km.
